Saudade 1936

Difficulty level: Advanced | Two pages

Saudade is a difficult-to-explain portuguese word, but maybe the essence of it is “longing for something or someone that’s gone”.

That longing is at the core of this piece. The music starts low, then goes through some unusual key changes and ends up singing a sorrowful song in the high register, and the ending is left unresolved, the feeling of saudade heightened by the last, yearning note.

Don’t be put off by the strange (for guitar) key signature of C minor in the beginning or the 3+3+2 time signature either: the music really is written in such a way that it reads quite easily and the notes translate nicely to the fingerboard.
